Ash Wednesday marks the 1st day of the Lent season. Lent is a time which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). It is at Lent that Christians (Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and Anglicans) observe fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline.
This year Ash Wednesday is on 17 Feb, 2010. Ash Wednesday is supposedly a wake-up call - forcing us to face mortality and sinfulness. A day of repentance.
*Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of repentance.
Other significant days during the season of Lent will be:
- Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter, the last Sunday of Lent) which marks Jesus triumphal entry to Jerusalem with a blessing of palms and procession.
- Maudy Thursday (the Thursday of the holy week which leads to Easter). A time of remembering the Last Supper
- Good Friday (a day of remembering Christ's death)
- Easter Sunday (the resurrection of Christ)
